Message from Dr. S.A. Wilson, Superintendent
For the past five years, Calhoun County Schools have focused on "Teaching and Learning" in an effort to educate all children in our school district. We have made tremendous academic process as our schools have improved in most categories. For the past three years, the district has received an excellent rating on the State's Report Card. Because of highly qualified teachers, dedicated staff, involved parents, supportive community and a very encouraging School Board, our focus has been quite successful as we promote continuous improvement.
Over a year ago, I notified everyone that it was time to turn our attention towards enhancing our "Teaching and Learning" methodology through personalized learning with digital devices. This technology is the wave of the future and our teachers and students must be equipped to step into the future with the competence needed for each student to succeed. If our students are to be "College and Career Ready", we must provide a blended learning approach through the use of these devices to enhance their learning opportunities and 21st century skills.
We have studied this mammoth and costly undertaking for quite some time, A technology committee was formed to look at other districts. We visited a large digital corporation and studied how to be creative in terms of financing the project. We have been deliberate in making the decision to deploy digital devices for our students and their teachers. A big part of the deliberations was insuring that our teachers had the training relative to the teaching methodology with the selected device. The big question to answer is how to sustain the initiative once we have moved forward.
I am pleased to inform you that we will roll out devices to all students in grades 3-12 during the 2015-2016 school year. I am optimistic that if we all work together with our Board, we will enhance the quality of education already provided to our students with the new digital.
